This exhibition highlights the playful and imaginative work of Maitejosune Urrechaga (b. 1977, Miami, Florida) with a focused presentation of her snabbit soft sculptures, whimsical hybrid creatures that are part rabbit, part snail. Long a fan of dolls and embracing a humorous approach to life and work, she creates soft sculptures with personality. Each snabbit wears a pair of roller-skates, a nod to the artist’s own passion for roller-skating as well as a humorous gesture meant to evoke childhood experience. These soft sculptures inspire nostalgia and demonstrate the power of play. Handmade with special care, each snabbit takes on unique features, incorporating materials given to her by family members as well as other sources. This exhibition includes both large and small snabbits as well as painting and video that celebrate this distinctive sculptural form.
Born and raised in Miami, Maitejosune Urrechaga is a South Florida artist working in a multitude of creative areas, including comic books, music, and film. She forms part of the musical duo of Miami’s Pocket of Lollipops where she plays bass and shares vocal duties. She built her foundation in visual arts through painting and drawing as a child in her parents’ garage, and later turned her talents to mixed media, installation, and music. As a musician, educator, and artist she delves into the world and combines these creative realms for inspiration to expand and stimulate her mind.
This presentation marks the first solo exhibition of Urrechaga’s work.
This exhibition was organized by the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College (MDC).
