Artist Spotlight: Pepe Mar<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Miami-based artist<\/li>\n<li>Known for collage, assemblage, and identity exploration<\/li>\n<li>MOAD commissioned Pepe Mar to create <em>ArtAngel<\/em> (2025) for the <em>Languages of Migration<\/em> exhibition at the Freedom Tower<\/li>\n<li>Created Paprika as a colorful, expressive alter ego<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prompt: What might an alter ego allow an artist to explore that their everyday self cannot?<\/p>\n<h2>During the Visit<\/h2>\n<h3>Gallery Activity: Looking at Paprika<\/h3>\n<p>Have students observe the artwork closely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guiding Questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you notice first?<\/li>\n<li>What materials or textures stand out?<\/li>\n<li>What personality traits does Paprika seem to have?<\/li>\n<li>What clues suggest where Paprika might come from?<\/li>\n<li>How is this character similar to or different from the artist?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Studio Activity: Create Your Alter Ego<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Step 1 \u2014 Name Your Alter Ego.<\/strong> Choose a name that reflects personality, culture, or symbolism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2 \u2014 Define Their Origins.<\/strong> Where do they come from; what moment or transformation created them; what cultural or personal influences shaped them. This can be literal, metaphorical, or mysterious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3 \u2014 Describe Their Purpose.<\/strong> What does this alter ego want? What do they protect, challenge, or reveal?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4 \u2014 Visual Design.<\/strong> Create a visual representation using collage, drawing, found materials, patterns, symbols, and textures.<\/p>\n<h2>After the Visit<\/h2>\n<p>Students present their alter egos and origin stories. Discussion prompts: What part of yourself does your alter ego express? How did you choose the colors, shapes, or symbols?
